Read More →The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Forest Department is the executing agency for the project “Development of Designated Forest Carbon Stock Assessment for REDD+ and Promotion of Carbon Credit Marketing in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.” The project covers designated forest lands across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with pilot implementation in Improved Forest Management (IFM) sites in Hazara and Malakand and an Afforestation, Reforestation and Revegetation (ARR) site in D.I. Khan Forest Division. The project is executed through the Forestry Planning & Monitoring Circle (FP&MC) under the administrative control of the Chief Conservator of Forests, Central Southern Forest Region-I, in coordination with other forest regions and relevant institutional support units.
REDD+ stands for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, plus conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks. The project has been designed to help Khyber Pakhtunkhwa establish an enabling environment for REDD+ interventions and carbon-credit development. The project responds to the increasing impacts of climate change, including floods, droughts, glacier melting, erratic rainfall, heat waves, pests and other environmental pressures. Forests play an important role in climate-change mitigation because they store carbon and remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The project therefore promotes sustainable forest management while developing mechanisms through which carbon benefits can be measured, verified and potentially marketed.
